Despite the obnoxious clamoring of the radio mafia and pundits, John McCain has taken the front runner status in the GOP race. Why? What the talking heads don't seem to realize is that Romney IS George Bush...and Bush can't get elected this year. My first reaction when I saw Romney was that he was another businessman type who became a governor. Been there, done that. In 2000, we all listened to the talking heads because we assumed they were wise and in the know about certain things. We wanted the White House back so badly after enduring 8 years of Clinton. We were told that Bush was the most electable, the most conservative. Well, he barely won in 2000 and 2004...and there is no way in hell he could ever win now. We are in a post 9/11 world, and we can't afford to have a President who needs on the job training with foreign policy. Just look at where Bush has taken us? I made my decision to vote for McCain around the time of the Iowa Caucus'. Benazir Bhutto had just been assassinated, and everyone was wondering what was going to happen in Pakistan. As we all know, Pakistan is a cesspool full of extremists (Osama Bin Laden has been hiding there for 6 1/2 years). Of all the candidates, Republican and Democrat, McCain was the only one who knew how to handle the situation. Romney didn't say much, Obama wanted to invade Pakistan, Hillary just talked about all the people she knew, etc. McCain seemed calm and said that we need to support the current president. Why? Because we don't want to create a situation of unrest because Pakistan is a nuclear power. Uh, doesn't Obama know that? McCain has also promised to get Osama Bin Laden. His name doesn't even get mentioned by the other candidates. At times like this, we need someone with balls.
As far as the "amnesty" issue is concerned, I just don't think it's an issue this year. Do the talking heads really think the vast majority of Republican voters want the US gov't to round up 12 million illegal immigrants (a la Elian Gonzalez) and send them back to Mexico? First of all, it's logistically impossible. Secondly, any candidate who claims they are going to do it is lying through his/her teeth. McCain's "amnesty" bill was the only sane way to handle the situation. Romney and Huckabee make me ill when they pander to the far right on this issue. Just as the Democrats make me ill when they pander to the far left when they claim they will pull out of Iraq. Oh please! Hillary says she have the troops home in 60 days after she is elected? Oh really? Then why did she(and Obama) vote to give the troops more money? The Democrats took back the House and Senate in 2006 on this very issue and they haven't done a damn thing. Nor will a Democatic President. Do you really think Hillary wants her first act in office to be creating a civil war in Iraq?
All I can say is that I am glad Mac is Back!
