Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards has just ruined any chance of becoming president. Why? Well, he hired two female gasbags to run his presidential blogs. Amanda Marcotte, stated in her blog Pandagon "What if Mary had taken Plan B after the Lord filled her with his hot, white, sticky Holy Spirit?" to which she replied "You'd have to justify your misogyny with another ancient myth". And that is just one of many anti-catholic statements she has made. Melissa McEwan said in her blog Shakespeare's Sister that President Bush's base are "wingnut, Chistofascist, godbags".
What makes this story pathetic is that, instead of doing the right thing, and firing these religious bigots, Edwards has decided to keep them on. His response to the controversy was "The tone and the sentiment of some of Amanda Marcotte's and Melissa McEwan's posts personally offended me. It's not how I talk to people, and it's not how I expect the people who work for me to talk to people. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that kind of intolerant language will not be permitted from anyone on my campaign, whether it's intended as satire, humor, or anything else. But I also believe in giving everyone a fair shake. I've talked to Amanda and Melissa; they have both assured me that it was never their intention to malign anyone's faith, and I take them at their word. We're beginning a great debate about the future of our country, and we can't let it be hijacked. It will take discipline, focus, and courage to build the America we believe in"
Uh.."never their intention to malign anyone's faith"? Puh leeze! Comparing the Holy Spirit to semen and suggesting Mary should have aborted Jesus Christ is not meant to offend anyone's faith? This is classic anti-Catholicism of the worst kind. If the women had said something anti-Semitic, racist, or homophobic, they would have been fired on the spot. The ugly truth is that anti-Catholicism is widely tolerated in the democratic party, which is why catholics have left the party in droves. Furthermore, since Edwards can't stand up to his own staff, or the bullying of his constituents, what makes us think he can stand up to Al Qaida or Kim Jong Il? In a world in which violence is justified in religious disputes, from the Middle East to Iraq, hiring these types of bigots is not a wise choice. In my opinion, he has just lost any chance of winning the Democratic nomination. He should just save his money and pull out now.
This link is a very funny parody on the controversy. Be prepared, there is much profanity.
