Dissident Chicks

You've got to love this :

Maines said, ''People are using their freedom of speech tonight [by giving us] all these awards. I'm very humbled.''

But, the people who criticized these people were ... what? I am so disgusted with people who think free speech is defined as being able to say what you think without being criticized.

Update: Love this letter that came in almost immediately:
COULD IT BE FREEDOM OF SPEECH MEANS YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT DEATH THREATS?
YOU'RE ABILITY TO THINK CRITICALLY IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY SHALLOW.

Me: I love this. First, you know it's gotta be right because it's in ALL CAPS. If only they printed the Bible in ALL CAPS the atheists would give up.
Second, as for the "substance," let me just note that threatening people is a crime. It's bad and only a fool would think I'm somehow endorsing death threats. But it should be noted that celebrities get death threats every day (heck, even I get them from time to time). Steven Spielberg and David Letterman have gotten severe death threats against them, I don't think they deserve Oscars or Emmys for it. And I don't think the Dixie Chicks are heroes for exploiting the free-speech backlash against them by making it seem as if they are heroic martyrs of some kind. Indeed, it's clear that the Dixie Chicks themselves understand that they didn't win because of their music but because of their manufactured "cause." Go cry me a river on 60 Minutes again sisters.
